The federal Department of Education is responsible for monitoring the financial condition of postsecondary institutions whose students received $125 billion in federal aid during 2016.  This report examines how DOE oversees the financial condition of colleges and universities, how effective the oversight has been, and how its findings are communicated to the schools and the public.   From the Government Accountability Office
