The SPM extends the official poverty measure by measuring the effect of government assistance programs.  Reports that under the SPM measure 45.7 million individuals in the U.S. fell below the poverty line in 2015 including 11.9 million children and 6.5 million adults age 65+.  From the Census Bureau
