Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association

Brief announcement of a 4-4 deadlock of the Supreme Court.  The case involved a claim by anti-union teachers in California that their free speech rights were violated by having to pay union dues.  The deadlock preserves the lower court decision that upheld a 1977 Supreme Court opinion that unions could collect fees from members and nonmembers who benefited from collective bargaining activities.  From the Supreme Court
