European Union Enlargement

European Union membership has grown from 15 to 27 countries since 2004.  The enlargement process is seen as a way to integrate European states and promote functioning democracies.  With five additional candidates for membership: Croatia, Iceland, Macedonia, Montenegro, and Turkey, questions have been raised about whether further enlargement will create problems relating to financing, identity, and migrant labor.   From the Congressional Research Service, posted by the Federation of American Scientists
