About half the nation’s workers participate in an employer-sponsored retirement plan, but the trend is toward defined contribution plans rather than defined benefit plans. In the former, the employee bears the investment risk, while in the latter the employer bears the risk. Uses data from the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finances to show that the median value of retirement accounts held by workers 55 to 64 rose from $58,000 in 2001 to $88,000 in 2004. Total classification activity in 2005 amounted to 14.2 million activities, a drop from the all-time record of 15.6 million in 2004. Also reports on declassification activities. Once again, the Office of the Vice President refused to report on its classification activity, in violation of a presidential order requiring such disclosure from all executive branch entities.
